A person who works with their hands is a laborer; a person who works with their hands and their brain is a craftsman; but a person who works with their hands and their brain and their heart is an artist.”
Louis Nizer
(1902-994)

Studio 308 began humbly in my garage in January 1999 on a whim. Within months it had grown to forty students, outgrowing that space and necessitating a move to a larger commercial location on West New York Avenue. During the three years there, the student population doubled. It soon became evident that the quality of artwork they were creating demanded a better showcase and exposure to a wider audience. Therefore, the Studio moved into the heart of downtown DeLand, and “the art gallery of student art” was born; and again the student population doubled!
In January of 2007 we moved once again to our present location within the “magic two block” area of Woodland Boulevard, where, in conjunction with creating art, we do a brisk business promoting and selling the students’ works in the form of original art, prints, note cards, and other art items students choose to offer.
In addition, we’ve added evening classes by guest art teachers, including watercolorist Janet Souza and local television personality Morris Wiener. We’ve hosted one of the famous Florida Highwaymen, artist Sylvester Wells, on three different occasions. Also for two years the Studio took on the daunting task of organizing and overseeing the annual the art show at the Volusia County Fair.
What was begun on a whim eight years ago continues to astound me with its success and support. And to answer those many folks who have asked where the name Studio 308 came from……. Very simply, it was the street address of the very first location – my garage.
