A person who works with their hands is a laborer; a person who works with their hands and their brain is a craftsman; but a person who works with their hands and their brain and their heart is an artist.”
Louis Nizer (1902-994)

Classes Available At Studio 308

The most asked question in my studio is, “Can you teach anyone to paint or draw?” My answer is a cautious,” Yes.” I believe that first of all, you once a student is taught how to truly look at the world – not how they think it looks, but how it really looks – they will then be able to recreate it on paper or canvas. Secondly, it’s most important to pick subjects that appeal to its creator. Life is too short to spend time creating a piece of art that doesn’t inspire both the artist and the admirer.

Colored Pencil

Colored pencils no longer have the stigma of having been your grandmother’s favorite grammar-school tool. With The Colored Pencil Society of America giving credence to this growing and popular form of art, it has become a very acceptable choice of artists. Beginning with good paper – Stonehenge is one of our favorites – and prismacolor pencils, you will learn the techniques of layering, blending, pencil stroke and direction, pressure, and burnishing.

Graphite Pencil

CONTRAST – CONTRAST – CONTRAST, shouts the sign hanging in the studio. With only a pencil to create the illusions of light and dark, rough and smooth, contrast is the most important element. Pencil leads ranging from very hard to very soft facilitate the process of stroking, hatching, cross-hatching, smudging, erasing, and layering to achieve gratifying results.

Pen and Ink

We joke in the studio that one must be obsessive, compulsive, with overtones of a controlling personality to enjoy pen & ink. It is time intensive and demanding – but oh…for that those that love it, it is soul-satisfying. For those that hate it (and there are many who do) it is a torturous effort. We use archival quality Micron pens in the studio as they are inexpensive, require no maintenance, are water-proof, fade-proof, and come in various sizes, from very fine to a broad brush. Marvelous effects can be achieved with applying ink in contour strokes, lines, controlled scribbling, crosshatching, and stippling, (that’s the art of putting ink on the paper one dot at a time- gotta love it!).

Watercolor pencil

For those who find using traditional watercolor frustrating and difficult we offer the simpler medium of watercolor pencil. The color is layer onto watercolor paper much as one would lay down colored pencil pigment. Water is then applied with a brush and the resulting end product it that of a watercolor painting. (So much easier.)

Mixed Media

Simply put, it is the mixing any, or all, of the above media together into one piece of art.

Oil painting

This is the art of applying oil paint onto a canvas to create realistic, impressionistic, abstract, or a variety of other images to create a pleasing painting. Learning how to mix colors is at the heart of this medium.
